a comprehensive look at what we're reading
I was speaking to my therapist the other week and found myself describing something I've started calling active recovery. Not in a sports sense, but in a burnout sense.
It turns out that sleeping for twelve hours a day and lying horizontally all weekend is not, in fact, the cure to burnout (who knew!). Turns out you actually have to leave the prone position to recover. The things that seem to be helping are much less dramatic: long walks with an audiobook, exploring new places, spending time with friends, and replacing at least some of my doom-scrolling with the delicious printed word.
With that in mind, I’ve had a particularly book-heavy few months.
I went to OFFPRINT at 180 Strand in May, which, for anyone who enjoys spending alarming amounts of money on independent magazines and obscure theory books, is basically Christmas Day. I wandered around for a couple of hours with my friend Em, picking up books, essays, journals and publications and giving my business card a battering.
